Effective Home Remedies for Acne

Written by: Robin King

In the Kitchen and In the Cupboard - Who Knew?
If you've had acne for years you may have tried numerous different treatments in order to free yourself from its ugly head. Or perhaps you have just gone through a patch of stress and hormones leading to an unpleasant breakout on your face and you don't have any medication handy and need a fix that can help without leading to buying a whole tube of Acne-B-Gone that you'll use for a few weeks and then never again. Either way, you might have some potential remedies right in your home that you were never aware of.

Ease the Swelling, Soothe the Skin
Swelling is a big part of acne problems; the redness of inflamed skin is the reason for its unpleasant look and abrupt coloring. Getting rid of the swelling can be a great way to both reduce this redness as well as calm skin. Sesame seeds that have been ground into a paste and then made creamier by the addition of water can help with inflammation. Place it on your face for several minutes to give your skin time to absorb some of the moisture and coolness in order to relax. You can also use a cotton ball that has been moistened with a bit of lemon juice - remember, this is to be used on unbroken skin! You are helping the swelling, not using these as an antiseptic. Inflammation can also be reduced by use of a wet tea bag.

Home Remedies for Acne within Arm's Reach
Home remedies for acne don't always mean using items like oatmeal or other foodstuffs, but you can try the toothpaste idea. It is a little controversial, some say it isn't a good idea, others have found no evidence to support it, but you can be your own judge. All you need is a dab of toothpaste, but be sure it is the paste type and not the gel type. Leave it on for several minutes (this may vary from person to person, as toothpaste will dry out skin, which isn't terribly helpful) and then rinse off. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables is a sure way to help your skin overall, so don't be afraid to snack on a fruit salad! You can also use the peel from any oranges you use and grind it up with some water to make a paste. Apply this to problem acne areas and then rinse after several minutes. If one remedy doesn't work, there are plenty more out there for you to try, so keep looking!
